KenGen’s Hydropower Surge Indicates Potential Drop in Electricity Prices

Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has reported a significant increase in hydropower generation as the Seven Forks Cascade dams reach some of the highest water levels in recent memory.

The standout performer in this surge is the Masinga Dam, Kenya’s largest, which has maintained near-maximum water levels of 1,056 meters above sea level (mASL) for the past three days. KenGen has witnessed remarkable operational performance at the Seven Forks facilities, with power stations achieving a peak output of over 471MW in the last 24 hours, contributing to the stabilization of grid-scale electricity costs.

Despite the rising water levels, KenGen assures residents downstream of the dams that there is no immediate risk of water spilling over. The company attributes the increased water levels to favorable inflows from the Mount Kenya and Aberdares catchment areas.

Peter Njenga, Managing Director, and CEO of KenGen, emphasizes the effectiveness of the company’s water management program, which has prevented water overflow despite nearing maximum capacity at the Masinga Dam. KenGen remains vigilant and will issue alerts if there is a risk of potential water overflow from the dams.

Inflation figures released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) highlight the significance of stable electricity costs in controlling overall consumer prices. The increase in electricity prices, driven by foreign exchange rate fluctuations, underscores the importance of maintaining reliable and competitively priced electricity generation.

Despite reduced inflows over the past week, KenGen remains confident that Masinga Dam will not reach spilling level anytime soon. The company reaffirms its commitment to generating reliable and affordable electricity, essential for driving Kenya’s economic growth.

Additionally, KenGen announces a dividend payout of KES 1.32 billion to shareholders, reflecting the company’s financial strength and commitment to creating value for investors.

As KenGen continues to leverage natural resources for sustainable energy production, the company plays a pivotal role in ensuring energy security and supporting Kenya’s development objectives.
