Kenyan serial entrepreneur talks about the power of a personal branding

Renowned Kenyan serial entrepreneur, Tonee Ndungu, stands as a testament to the power of personal branding in the business world. Ndungu, the brain behind the innovative startup Kytabu, has reshaped the education sector with a groundbreaking textbook subscription application. This application, accessible through low-cost tablets, allows primary and high school students to rent all textbooks from the Kenyan education curriculum on flexible hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or annual terms. Kytabu’s remarkable vision recently garnered significant attention, securing an impressive investment of US$350,000.

Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, Ndungu emphasizes the pivotal role of personal branding in attracting investors and building trust. He underscores the importance of maintaining up-to-date public profiles on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook, which serve as valuable sources of information for potential investors. Ndungu stresses that investors seek more than just a promising startup; they also seek trustworthy and reliable entrepreneurs. Hence, he advocates for entrepreneurs to focus on branding both their businesses and themselves online to establish credibility and foster trust.

In addition to social media profiles, Ndungu highlights the significance of personal websites in promoting oneself effectively. Personal websites serve as a platform to showcase an entrepreneur’s goals, achievements, and aspirations. Ndungu reveals that his personal website, which took him two weeks to develop, has been instrumental in communicating his passion for entrepreneurship and positioning himself as an industry expert. He believes that a personal website should articulate an individual’s passion clearly, whether it’s entrepreneurship, art, writing, or any other pursuit, thereby making a lasting impression on visitors.

Ndungu’s personal website not only showcases his passion for entrepreneurship but also serves as a valuable resource for aspiring entrepreneurs. He regularly shares insights and advice on entrepreneurship, drawing from his own experiences of success and failure. Ndungu believes in transparency and encourages entrepreneurs to openly share their past successes and failures on their online profiles. This authenticity enables others to relate to their journey and learn from their experiences.

Central to Ndungu’s branding strategy is the concept of standing out. He draws inspiration from Seth Godin’s “Purple Cow” philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of being remarkable and distinct. Ndungu incorporates this idea into his business card for Kytabu, describing himself as a “founder,” “innovation architect,” and “nice guy.” This unconventional approach has proven effective in making a lasting impression on potential investors and networking contacts.

Tonee Ndungu’s entrepreneurial journey exemplifies the power of personal branding in driving success in the business world. By leveraging digital platforms and personal websites to showcase passion, expertise, and authenticity, entrepreneurs can establish credibility, attract investors, and stand out in a competitive landscape. Ndungu’s story serves as a testament to the transformative impact of personal branding in shaping entrepreneurial careers and driving innovation forward.
